Hello everyone,

I recently jumped into this yak-fishing thing with both feet and had my first paddle-fest on Texoma this weekend. It wasn't a long fishing expedition as I was just looking to see how it would do and it was a blast even with the nasty wind gusts.

Anyways, I was wondering if there are any smaller bodies of water that are fairly close to the Mckinney area that are kayak friendly? I am not asking for secret honey holes, but some info would be helpful to the newer crowd.

Also, if anyone would like a good laugh out of watching a newbie flail about, I'm game. No, seriously I'd like to meet some great people in this community and possibly introduce some great people as well.

Best regards,
Troy

Welcome Troy. I'm not from that area but I have been to prosper town lake. The launch is pretty easy and it's a good place to break in the kayak a little more. I'm sure some people that are more familiar with McKinney will chime in. welcome

Welcome man, im still a green-horn myself. Google earth has become my best friend. Some of the images are outdated, but I just look for bodies of water that look like they have a launch point. Some ive gone to are completely off limits, you just have to weed those out. Found a ton of new honey holes. If you are ever out this side of ft worth, hit me up and we can hit em up

Thanks for the info Fishing Fester. I've definitely been scanning Google earth and I'm down to go as long as I don't have my kiddos.

Redsoxnation, I'm going to add those to the list.

As anyone gone out lately?

There's Southlake in Farmersville. You can always go to Lake Lavon and catch some cats and sandies... when the water clears up some.

There's a couple other places that are around that are honey holes to us though. We generally aren't going to give those up too easily. There's a few others around, but make sure that they are not private.

I understand that honey holes are near and dear to our hearts and I'm not expecting public invitations. Maybe a mentor and fishing buddy would be great as I enjoy fishing and while landing a good size bass is awesome, sometimes you want to share more than just a picture of it.

There is a tournament out at South Lake, is that the same one you are talking about?

Cool. It's definitely on the list.

Has anyone tried Herman Baker in Sherman? I found a video of a family kayaking out there.

1. Prosper Town Lake: This is my favorite "go to" lake as it is just a few miles from home and very paddle friendly for my 12 year old daughter. Fishing is decent too. Lake is currently closed due to high water right now. When it goes down, it will be fun to see what fish have been washed in/out.

2. Southlake in Farmersville: Fun lake to paddle and fish. Easy access to drop a kayak in at the boat ramp. No dragging required.

3. Green Belt of the East Fork off 380: Easy launch site. Fishing can be good at times. I like the fact that you can paddle south to Lewisville Lake or North to Ray Roberts dam. Area is flooded currently and closed off to paddlers. Also, with all the flooding, there may be a lot of log jams so this may require you to portage or may be unable to go any further.

4. Lakes off Hebron Pkwy in Lewisville: Not sure what these lakes are called, but I see a lot of kayakers launch from a mini boat ramp just off Hebron Pkwy. Looks like a lot of water to fish.

5. McInnish Park:Off Sandy Lake Rd in Coppell. Boat launch just north of the dam. Easy paddle up river with plenty of fishing.

Those are just 5 of my easy paddle locations without naming off the obvious local lakes. I paddle with my 12 year old daughter, so I try to avoid anywhere with boat traffic.
