I didn't spring for rudder on my Coosa. 1) How much benefit to either? 2) what is difference in operations of them?

I wouldn't go anywhere without a rudder. Improves tracking, holds course well in the wind, and perfect for holding that perfect angle when drifting.

Skeg helps with tracking but is immobile while the rudder helps with tracking and turning. Research rudder systems before you put the stock rudders on, most manufacturers have mobile foot pegs while there are some that you can still brace and turn the rudder with a gas pedal like motion rather than moving pedals to turn the rudder.

Since I spend more time paddling than fishing and am most often in a touring kayak I have both, and highly favor a rudder over a skeg. A skeg does nothing to assist steering and is more for helping prevent drift caused by wind or waves.

Also, I have both the mobile foot pegs and the stationary (SmartTrack brand gas pedal) foot pegs in my fleet but my peference is overwhelming for the stationary foot pegs because as said above, they allow me to both steer and brace.
