I will be taking my grandpa and some other family down to Freeport in 2 weeks and want to know how the fishing is going. We will do some Surf, jetty, and some bay fishing. Mostly surf though. Last time I was there was a couple weeks ago and the fishing was terrible, we couldn't even catch whiting in the surf. So let me know what they're biting on. I would like it to be a fun memorable trip for them. (P.S. Any bay fishing we do is bank fishing, we don't have a boat and we will only fish places that are easy to access.)

We went today to see how things were going, still is really bad in the surf, too much rain water is making the bait go deep and the fish with it. We, again, could only catch hardheads. But eventually hooked into a BIG whiting on a whole mullet. Filleted it there and used the head to try for a shark, about 15 minutes later had line screaming out the reel but pulled it out its mouth. Overall, another disappointing trip.

I just talked to my old man down there and he said the fresh water runoff is pushing everything out. He even told me it's not worth bringing my boat down for the week. I might bring it anyway just in case and I want to do some work on it anyway.

^^^ Wow! Nice catch!
I went after work yesterday and saw some folks catching Specks. The water looked good, the mudline from the Brazos was a long ways offshore.
I caught a 20" Black Tip that bit before I could get the rod back in the holder, that was it though.
Guess I need to start focusing more on Specks.

Unfortunately I was no where near there for those fish. I went Sunday and surf was a bit choppy and off colored, got 1 red. But of course when I had to go back to work it was on. That's a co worker in pic that took a couple days off, Monday and Tuesday, tore em up. Trying again Saturday, water is supposed to be good thru Monday, so reports say. Freeport side may take a little longer to get right.

What is your method for catching specks and reds?

Sorry for late response, method, I don't really have one. I usually fish with live shrimp about 18"-22" under a rattling cork. Give it a little pop every minute or so. DOA shrimp I bounce off bottom in a stop and go style reeling action. Top waters I use top dawgs also in a stop and go manner. Other than that I don't do a lot of studying on styles of retrieving.

Like I said in earlier post I wasn't there. But I'm sure to first sandbar, maybe 2nd. If it goes over my head after 1st sandbar, I back up. Heard from a buddy that fished the area yesterday evening and landed a couple keepers and quite a few throwbacks. But he also said something I didn't like, it was choppy. Maybe cuz it was in the evening and winds picked up, just hope it lays down in the morning.

I went Saturday afternoon, a lot of activity in the second gut. Late in the day I gave up on my bait rigs and waded out with all the other folks (who'd been catching a few specks). I saw two Spanish mackerels caught, and could see some BIG fish blasting big mullet near the 3rd bar. I caught several small fish on a spoon that I have no idea what they were, some type of jack/mackerel looking fish.
At dark, I had a guy refreshing me on how to throw a cast net. Standing in ankle deep water, throwing into shin deep water practicing my throws, I caught a 17" speck. Go figure.
