I've been wondering how they 'check' the brakes. Do they just push in the actuator, check to see if it's full of fluid, or what? Our big trailers with electric brakes are easy to check. Not sure I want them pulling my trailer and jamming on the brakes. Just curious; if anybody has had theirs done yet, please let us know.

Bthomas I did a search on the forum and nothing came up, this is the only reason I asked. Also some folks aren't on here daily reading every post. Seems like I'm not the only person interested in info.
Thanks!

Gil, I had to do mine last month too. Just like Lamoon78 stated. Not a big thing, I guess the state just needed more $. Hope BThomas don't get too upset with me replying to you

Trailers exceeding a gross weight of 4500 lbs are required to have a safety inspection and if it exceeds 4000lbs it must be titled. All others are not such as boat trailers under the above weights. All trailers must have a registration tag no matter the weight.

If you received a renewal notice that said you need to get it inspected, you DO need to have it inspected. All the normal stuff must work and it MUST have brakes. You will need to locate an inspection station that can do trailers, not all stations can. All you need to know can be found here: http://twostepsonesticker.com/

Trailer Inspection Requirements
Certain trailers require an inspection prior to registration. If your trailer has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) that is more than 4,500 pounds, an inspection is required. This includes trailers, semitrailers, boat trailers, pole trailers, mobile homes, travel trailers. Note: Farm trailers displaying a farm license plate are not required to be inspected. If you are unsure about the gross vehicle weight of your trailer, check your registration receipt for the weight. For more information about the specific inspection requirements, please visit the DPS website or contact your nearest DPS regional headquarters.

You can register less than 4500 lbs even if trailer is rated for 7k etc. That is if your boat is going to be under registered weight.
