My buddy was fishing the other day and ran his boat over something pretty hard. It left a spot on the bottom about 3/8"wide and probably 5 foot long where gel coat is missing. Will it hurt to use the boat?

Its hard to say without seeing it if its not leaking maybe but it could get under the gel and peel it off more.

How deep is the main thing. Did the boat have extra water in it when he pulled the plug?

If the glass is exposed it needs to be fixed or you run the risk of delaminating the hull.
