I'd say it was a good day. Sabine River, 1947. BJ Courmier's grandfather. Caught on live bream on trotlines using 1.5' stagings. "Just a day's catch" back then. What do you think these fish weigh?

I don't know, but that one in the middle is a biggun. If there was something of known size in that pic it wouldn't be hard to tell, like the diameter of that pipe etc.

If that is a 2 inch pipe they are hanging on, which looks about right then the fish is about 52 inches long.
Looking at a few length/weight estimators that would put the big fish in the mid 60 lb range.
I don't think that fish on the far left will go 40.

The thing about the middle one is that it looks so fat all over it. It looks like it just held up in some hole eating all the time, until deciding to come out one day to be caught. It looks very thick and doesn't have the usual taper to its body...most big flathead pictures I see they look like they're "fit" in my opinion.
That one reminds me of Jabba da hut

If its 2-3/8's pipe the fish would be 60 inches long and in the 100 lb class.
Probably no way to really know. They are all big fish. I also think the way in which the picture was taken makes them look bigger than what they probably were.

Not sure about the weight, but it is nice to see a Pic that is not photo Shopped... LOL The best part about Flats, is no matter what size they are GOODDDDDDD. Un-like Blues. and he was probably in a boat smaller than all of ours, or wadding.. those were Tuff but good times.

I have eaten blues up into the 80 lb mark and several in the 50 lb range. They are no worse than any other catfish. Trim fat and red off and they eat about like any other catfish in the water, even the little ones.

Lot of it depends on where you fish. Some of the rivers I have fished have a very small population of blue cats almost everything is yellas and channels. There is lots of land locked rivers, miles and miles that don't see a lot of fishing pressure once you get away from the bridges.

I have several old pics like this from what would be my great grand father early 1900's maybe in the teens.
Many of them are on rivers or bays with just loads of fish. Also ones under big oak trees in south Texas where they would have 10 to 15 deer hanging up.
My grandmother told me that is how her dad made a living for the family. He traded fish and meat for other goods. I need to scan some of them in as for a have a ton and some from the 1800's.

That'd be great. I love seeing old pictures of what it used to be like. Something I've noticed is sometimes pictures come out better if you take a picture of it with the flash off but in good lighting instead of scanning the picture. Other times, the scanner comes out better. I guess it depends on the picture and the scanner...I don't know
