Never had a fish finder before, but wanting to add one to my kayak. I've watched quite a few youtube videos, read on this forum, and went to bass pro to play with some of the different models.

I've narrowed it down to these:

Elite 4x CHIRP w/ Downscan

OR

Elite 3x DSI

the 3x has downscan only. I guess I don't see my self using the regular sonar. In what scenarios would I need/want that added feature of the 4x?

Interested to hear any personal experiences with either of these.

Thanks,
Matt

Both great little units and low price point. The 4x CHIRP does give you both down-scan and sonar. You will appreciate having both sonar & down-scan. Love to run them side by side.

I still like having 2d sonar running. Makes it easier for me to glance and see fish quickly. Traditional sonar has a cone shaped beam and DI the beam is very thin and shoots side to side and works best when moving. If it were me, I'd want the 2d also.

I started with a DSI unit only. I'll jump to the punchline and say get sonar and DSI. It's extremely difficult to pick out fish on DSI and especially on the small screens. The DSI will let you see more detail on cover and structure. The sonar will let you see better if there are any fish hanging around it.

If you really want to go the DSI route only, I'll make you a deal on a 4x DSI unit that I started with on my yak.

JMHO, but I can't say that I've used sonar once since I got down imaging.
