I bought my boat in December. Used from a guy that was having some issues. I got the title, bill of sale, and mAintenence records: I can't find where I put the folder I had all of it in, and don't know what to do. Yes I know I should have taken care of it immediately but I didn't. Since then the guy has changed his number and then I get pulled over today and DPS tells me that the regristration sticker is a fake. I'm no angel but I do like to abide by the law! Help!

Lot of holes in this story. It was the DPS that pulled you over? Was it the registration on the boat or the trailer they said was fake? There are procedures to follow, but we need more specific information.

Apply for a bonded title. That's about all you can do I would think at this point.

I think his big problem is, it was never put in his name..he can't do anything about a boat he doesn't own and he can't get the 'owner' to contact him.........I'D be looking for that folder...

I don't think DPS pulls you over for boat registrations issues. If the boat registration is fake, there is a procedure to follow to find out the history of ownership. Finding the will help, but there seems to be more to this story from the previous owner.

If you have a TPWD office near you, they have a process where you can get a title. The problem is getting some one in the office that will help you!!!! My wife is going through the same ordeal for a good friend that can no longer tend to his personal or financial business. He purchased a rig used and lost the title before it was put in his name and cannot locate the man he purchased it from.

Even spending a full day looking for the folder will be easier than trying to get the boat titled without the old title and completed TPWD boat transfer papers.

Just curious, was this a Craigslist find?

Does the trailer have a vin and the weight stamps on it? If it's GVW Total(trailer and it's load) is under 4000lbs you don't need a title. If it's 4500 and above then it'll need inspected also before you could register it. If it's more then that 4000lbs you will need a title check done and apply for a bonded title. That is your only option if something doesn't come up on it that looks bad with the vin check. I just did this on two trailers I have.

If you never transferred the title to your name then good luck. If you did then it is easy to get a new one. For a vehicle you have to go to Addison. I know this because my son lost his. I am guessing you would go to TPW for boat. I bought a pop up camper from a dude once that had never transferred the title to his name when he bought it from someone else. I insisted that he do so or I was not buying it.
