What gear ratio reels do you guys use most for deep cranks, vs medium crank. Deep to me would be 10ft +, and anything shallower I'd consider a medium crank. Thoughts?

Like anything, it really depends on conditions. All around for shallow cranks like squarebills, I like a 6.3:1

On deeper cranks, I will crank slower with a 5.5:1 in the winter and have used up to a 7.6:1 for deep speed cranking in the spring/summer. I caught my biggest bass last year burning a crankbait on a 7.6:1 reel.

FWIW, Keith Combs is arguably the best deep crankbait fisherman out there right now and he uses a 7.1:1

Only problem I have when cranking with a 7.1:1 is after a while it starts to really wear on my wrist. I can drop to a lower gear ratio and keep on cranking for hours.

I am more old school, instead of cranking like Keith does. He is trying to get a reaction bite with cranking that fast and it works. I try to get a reaction bite by slowing down and not covering as much water and leaving the CB in the zone for a longer time on each casts. I use a 5.1:1 ratio for my deep CBs and often for my medium CBs. Shallow, I use the 5.1:1 sometimes, sometimes I use a 6.4:1 ratio. So, IT DEPENDS on what you are trying to do, besides catch fish. Throwing a 7.1:1 reel on a deep CB all day is VERY tiring and like mentioned above, most people have to switch to a slower reel throughout the day, but to each his own. Hope this helps.

Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Had the same question and bought the Revo Winch 5.4:1. To my understanding, it is specifically designed for medium and deep diving crank baits.

You won't be disappointed...

SOOOO kvd will advocate

5-1 on deep, maybe up to a 6.3

Keith Combs uses 7-1 on basically everything he talked about it at falcon. He coment was, I can slow down, but i need to be able to catch up to fish....

soooooo I think your hand gets less tired with a 5-1 but you cant burn it as well...
If i'm using a square bill i'm typically going FAST...so I use fast, but that said, I dont own a reel less than 6.3 buuuut I do have an 8-1 and am gona buy another.(no i really dont use them for cranking)

I think it is about what you like, and what "Feels" right to you... A guy who fishes 2 fast can slow down with a low gear lure and still wind pretty fast and keep him feeling like he is moving along

David Fritts was known for his deep cranking ability and he used a 4.4-1 gear ratio reel.
