Could only catch one catfish today when I went out to white river, which just came up quite a bit. I figured that fishing the mouth of the creek would produce, but I could only catch that one. There were lots of carp busting the surface, but no cats.

Any ideas as to what I could have done differently? I was fishing with chicken breast soaked in dead red on a santee rig. Couldn't tell you the depth, didn't have a fish finder.

Also, where would you target channel cats when a lake rises really quickly like white river did. It came up about 8 foot in a week

Don't feel bad, we hammered them in running muddy water last weekend and just almost got skunked this weekend in the same areas. Sometimes you are the windshield, other times you're the bug.

For channels I'd listen to Tom.

Thank you guys! It makes me wonder if they were still in what was shallow water timber a week ago that you could see above water, but is now sitting in 10 to 15 foot of water... now I really need to get that fish finder mounted

listen to Tom Channesl will normally move in to the flooded vegetation. such as grass and bushes, put your bait as close as you can to those areas. are you chumming, i know you have a yak but A&J out doors has a dry style cum that I have heard works really well and does not smell it just takes a hand full and with a kyak you should be able to get in there nice and quite and pretty close that is if you like channels

Had the exact same experience several years ago on that lake. Had been tearing them up for several trips before the rise, then few and far between. They'll move into the new cover and SCATTER.

No fish is too good for the grease.

you gotta find the fish but hard to do without a fish finder ... just because it's wet where you are doesn't mean there's fish there... I don't ever get skunked and usually 100 lbs is a slow day for me ... that's because I find the fish first and if I don't get bit in 15 minutes after setting my rods out I pack up and move shallower and locate fish in shallower water until I start getting bit... can't miss like that. fishing running water is a whole different animal than lake fishing too... if the water is rising the fish will be out in the current and moving up feeding on the fresh vegetation, worms and bugs being washed into the river .. they feed like crazy as the water is rising ... when the water crests and starts to fall it's like flipping a switch .. they shut off it seems like but they don't really ... they're relocating to current eddys and deeper waters as it's their natural instinct to move to deeper water so they don't get stranded on dry land or shallow puddles of water. so when the water is rising you can catch fish anywhere on the river as they're moving up like crazy in rising water ... when falling pull back to the current eddys that have deeper water on the inside bends of the river where the hydrolics of the current have washed out deeper holes or back to the mouth where the river is running into the lake .. these are the places they go when the water is falling. first thing you need to determine is whether or not the river is rising or falling... if it's staying steady at a certain level and not rising or falling then this is the time to hit the flooded grass beds as they won't feel the need to pull back to deeper waters when the water levels aren't falling. Write this stuff down because this is something that catfishermen need to know because it's important to know how the fish move when they're getting fresh influx of water at all junctures... this will take most of the guesswork out of looking for them too.

Tiny hit the mark I think. Rising water we couldn't keep 3 poles a piece out. Same area a few days later with falling water and only caught a few channels and gar.

Man, maybe I should have done a bit more fishing around the 3 small islands that got created by the rising water. There was a ton of green brush and timber surrounding them
