Hey guys!

Long time cat/bass fisherman, very new flounder, red, speck guy--

I've caught a couple of flounder off of my aunt's dock in Baytown, TX- with an uglystik/Abu spinning rod/reel on gulps-- I was wondering what rig is best for these types of fish from dock? The house is about 20 sec walk from the dock and we will most likely spend most of the time here and maybe some fishing from the surf?? I see a bunch of reds jumping and flounder are all around the dock-- What type of line (fluro/mono/braid) should I use? What lb test? Any particular rigs?

First things first. Those fish jumping that you see are mullet. Red fish tend to hang on or near the bottom.

12 pound line with a reel with a good drag should be sufficient for most bay/dockside use. For the flounder I like to use a jig tipped with a little strip of cut bait bounced along the bottom. Bounce the jig along the dock pilings and out around the dock. If the dock has lights keep an eye out for feeding trout.

Thanks for the info! I've done some looking and saw a lot about 1/8 oz jigs tipped with cut strip / Free lining shrimp under a popping cork / plum/chartreuse 5" SW Bass Assassin artificials / pearl gulp shrimp, etc, etc-- can't wait to go!

For the surf, go to the surf, put a shrimp or cut mullet, maybe gulp, on a bottom rig and cast out into the cuts. Areas where it is deeper. I usually walk out to the second sandbar and cast about 15 yards and then either walk back and set my pole down or if the bite is really fast, I stand there and wait. That will catch you whiting( most often), black drum(less often), and redfish(less often). You may also catch other species like pompano, lady fish, and catfish.
