Brand new to swimbait fishing so need advice-which is better (braid or fluorocarbon) for the small to medium swimbaits? (1/2oz to 1 1/2oz baits typically) I've been throwing the weedless swimbait heads with hook buried in body so I feel like I need a stout line to drive the hook home through the thick swimbait. Also, a buddy and I were out fishing Carolina rigs recently and I was using fluoro while he used braid for his main line. (I think he had regular mono for his leader) Same baits and weights, and I caught a lot more than he did. We're wondering if the line made the difference?? I had a guide on Fork tell me he switched all of his braid over to fluoro because he really felt he got more bites on the fluoro....especially with his jig fishing.

on a c-rig braid main line is the only way I'll go... And I'll fish against anybody who wants to take me to prove it doesn't effect them. I use a co-poly leader generally. How long was your buddies leader? I'm of the opinion presentation is FAR more important than line choice. Go watch G-mans video about line and bait choice and KISS theory. Puts things in perspective.
Swimbaits to me is a lot about how you throw them and what lakes... Gin clear lake where I'm fishing in more open water, fluro is probably getting the nod especially if slow rolling.
Burning it up high in the column like almost like a wake bait, braid, MAYBE a fluro leader if I feel the water is way clear.
If there is grass involved I'm probably throwing braid

Flouro 100% of the time. Get on one of the swimbait forums and see what those guys say. All of the guys that I know that make swimbaits will tell you Flouro. And get a reel that will handle a swimbait. A reel with a small spool will not hold up with a 4 oz bait for extended use. You need a large line capacity to make long casts.

Braid main line for CR, Floro for leader. When pulling through heavy brush, rather have an easy break and just lose leader/hook then having to retie in multiple spots on the rig.

My choice is 20 lb floro for main line and 15 lb big game mono below swivel for a little more float

Braid main line for c rigs, mono for the leader, unless I want the lure to really kick up a lot of crud, then I use p line so it stays on bottom. Braid on the big swim baits, copoly on the small ones.

Question for you guys that are recommending braid for the "big" swimbaits: Have you ever experienced a "cast off" bait when the line inadvertently digs into the spool and the reel suddenly stops mid-cast? If you want to see how far a 8" huddleston can go, throw it on braid

If you want to see how far a 8" huddleston can go, throw it on braid Man I've seen it a few times in the boat but I've been real lucky to avoid the line snap casts. . .I saw my buddy cast off $60 worth of tackle on one cast with an A rig and later that day snap off a lunker punker. Lol. He was in a BAD mood.

I will take you up on that bet at Lake Fork. I used to fish braid as a main line for a C-rig all the time but on Fork it does make a difference. Now I use fluorocarbon as a main line on one rig and a co-polymer line as a main line on my second rig.
BTW....baits do not "float" behind your heavy C-rig weight unless you are using a "floating" type bait. If you don't believe me, drag one in a swimming pool some day and watch it.

I use a co-polymer line either McCoys mean green in 20-25 or P-Line CXX 20# test for large swim baits both soft plastic and the hard plastic and wood ones.
I use 65 pound test braid for throwing 7-9 inch wooden Lunker Punkers because I like braid better for walking the dog with this bait.

There are a lot of guys that use flouro but there was a post one time about this topic. The owner of one of the big bait companies ( I think it was BullShad Baits)posted and said he used 25lb mono. There are going to be a lot opinions and none will be wrong but that was good enough for me and to this day I have not lost one yet. I think you use whatever you have the most confidence in. If I can remember who he sent the post to I will put it on here and maybe he can tell you the exact content of the post as to why he uses mono. He goes by MagFluker on here. Send him a PM if you would like to know the content of the post that he received.
