Get the largest screen you can afford that comes with a structure scan bundle. If you hurry, you can prolly find some gen2 Lowrances on sale before they're gone.

No. I am still using Gen1 and have no reason to spend any more money. Gen2 has a faster processor than Gen1. I'm not sure what Gen3 brings to the table. I don't care, because I'm not spending any more money when it will not catch me any more fish. Get the best you can afford and spend time learning how to use it.

Those look great. Fish all over the place near the bottom right on the second image. Did you find out what kind of fish they were?
I usually see crappie stacked around trees, but not scattered on the bottom like that. I've see catfish on the bottom scattered like that though.
Great images, thanks for sharing them.

Tim

Hi all, new guy here and have found this very informative but I still have some questions. I see that I would want at least a HDS-8 gen 2 but what is the difference between the HDS-8 and a Elite-9 Chirp model? Which one is the better model to use for all around fishing and the structure scan features?

Also, I see that the HDS-8 is 50/80/200khz while the Elite-9 uses 455/800 kHz (DownScan Imaging), Low, Med, High (CHIRP), 50 kHz/83kHz/200kHz. Which is better?

No I didn't fish'em to see what they were, I knew they were not crappy & that's what I was chase'en...
They are closer to the middle of the water column than the bottom you can see that from how far away their shadows are from them.....
Thanks fer tha compliment!

The Elite line of graphs are not side scan compatible and only offer down scan. You will need one of the HDS graphs if you want side scan.

I just upgraded to an Elite 5 Chrip. I'm impressed by what I can see so far. I caught five off this set of pilings.

Question if I get a map card will it be possible to save screenshots to it?

Desull, you don't need a map card, but you do need an SD card to save screenshots
