I have an older 5500C reel I bought used. When I cast it it makes a high pitch grinding noise like gears are maybe dry. It casts fine but something is not right. Don't know if it has ever been cleaned or not. Any ideas or suggestion?

Definitely have it cleaned well. I have a couple of older 5500Cs that have done the same thing as you describe. The oldest one I've had since about 1975, and it still works like a champ. Just clean and oil it, and you still have a great reel.
