I am pretty open on my budget, but would target no more than $300 on the reel.

Looking for something to throw lighter baits (cranks and weightless flukes and similar) and want a setup that will give me good distance. Would prefer to use braid (probably 12-20# range).

I've done a little research online but would prefer opinions.

Thanks in advance

So far looking at these:

Duckett 360
Quantum Accurist
Shimano Citica
Shimano Curado (lots of models on this; not sure the differences besides gear ratios)

Id stay away from Quantum, had nothing but toruble with my Accurist when I had it. If your limit is $300 I would at some of the JDM Daiwa's, Abu's, and Shimano's. They have some that are catered to casting lighter finesse baits that should work well and plenty to choose from in that price range. Just google JDM reel websites and you should be able to find some good sites to order from. www.japantackle.com is one of them.

Other than that id stick with domestic Daiwa, Shimano, and higher end Abu.

Plenty of rods to choose from and you are going to get a TON of opinions on which ones are better.

Thanks for the tips (more are still welcome). I wasn't aware Abu had higher end reels; i thought they were all lower-mid grade stuff. They always hold up for me but never feel like anything special and end up as catfishing rigs for me.

Any preference on which Shimanos to look at? There seems to be a lot of nice ones that people swear by

Should i look for a longer (7'6" or so) light-medium rod to pair with it? I prefer to finesse fish than to muscle them in so wouldn't mind a softer rod.

Love my Shimano Cauis reels, they have been nothing but a treat to run with, and they're sealed and saltwater approved. At only $65 or so, they won't break the bank either.

Lews BB1 Pro reel. Available for right around $150 if you look. Then a TFO 7'3" medium action Tactical rod. Or if you want a bit more classic action go for a TFO 7'6" med or Med/light Signature rod.

Rod is either $149 or $109.

I would recommend for crankbaits the 7' Abu Garcia Winch rod with the Abu Garcia SX reel in the 6:4.1 gear ratio. I use this setup for all of my small crankbait fishing and this setup is lightweight and sensitive.

If you don't spend the full #300 on one reel, and have $50 left over, get an H20 Xpress as a sturdy, reliable backup. Heck, I'd get it first, then get an H20 Ethos rod, then some lures, and then spend the other $150 on something else!

...wisdom

Daiwa Tatula Type R paired on a Tatula rod. Can throw lighter baits easy. You can pick the reels up on eBay pretty easily for $139 - probably that price or less on the rod. I got my rod from Carlos @ Riveratackle here on the TFF. Good guy to deal with.
