got bored and threw a line off our dock around 6pm today and caught so many sand bass in 2 hours i lost count - totally unexpected - all on varying swim baits with a medium colorado blade attached - all were keepers, but also released, largest was 14 3/4 inches:

my question is this: i have never caught a yellow bass (at least i don't think so), is the following one (and not a small hybrid)? i totally forgot to look at the tooth patch (or lack thereof for a yellow bass) - picture does not show it, but was definitely a shiny yellow color and only breaks in lines were over anal fin - want to cancel off the bucket list if this is it

Thanks for any help!

Yes they will, however that is a small hybrid.

Hybrid yellow will be a bit deeper in the body.

It ain't easy making it look easy.

I was fishing a few weeks ago and caught a lot of yellow bass. Are there any tricks when fishing on structure to catch less yellow and more sand bass. I was using a mepps with a silver blade, and the body of the lure was yellow and red. Seemed like the yellow bass loved that one. My friend who was also fishing a mepps with a silver blade with the gold colored body was not catching as many yellow bass. I was wondering if it was that simple...

If I remember correctly, Carey used to say that the yellows on Lavon were actually hitting the hook, not the lure. Supposedly changing from silver hooks to bronze colored ones helped reduce yellow:white ratio.

Again, my memory may be fuzzy - and this was with slabs not inline spinners. Same thing might hold true though - if you get a chance play with a couple of color patterns and see if there is a consistent difference.

thanks - ironically i found the same picture - i can usually ID hybrids pretty well that's why this one confused me - picture does not show, but it had a deep yellow to it - dock was on SW corner of lake - all docks around had same - not sure why they decided to all show up and bite anything (i probably could have caught one with a Taco Bell spork!!) - about to go check again as conditions seem similar to yesterday
