I'm originally from Bonham. Grew up with one foot in the river. It used to be good from the dam all the way down to Telephone, Tx until the stripers were introduced. Fishing in the river is very poor now unless you way on downstream near Paris where there is some deeper water. Summer fun was catching drum on little white crawfish on a double hook rig. Bringing in 4 to 6 lb drum two at a time was a hoot. Channel cat along the banks on yellow grasshoppers as many as you could tote outta there and then there was the sand bass run. Always plenty of shiners for jugging. Stripers have pretty much ruined the river for at least 25-30 miles below the dam.
From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."
Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

I've only ever caught stripers out of the river, below the dam. When they are letting water out it can be pretty crazy fishing there! I would imagine that its like any other river with lots of running water. Find a cut or bend with a slow moving area of water and cast into it. I've been fishing the elm fork and a few other creeks and have been slaughtering the blues and channels on cut shad. The current has been really strong so I've been fishing the creeks in the flooded out banks in 2-3ft of water. Lots of fishing moving in that shallow area trying to avoid current. Caught 1 to 40lb fish in the shallows last week after the rain. I'd be willing to bet you could do the same on the river below the damn. I know theres a few cuts that stay relatively calm when they are letting water out. You dont have to throw it way out there, I've caught all mine within 10ft from the bank.

Thanks for the info guys! I've never fished or caught a striper, so if I do it'll be a welcome surprise

I never noticed the fishing being that bad below the dam. Grew up in Grayson county, fished there mostly in the early 90's as a teenager. Not sure how the stripers could have ruined the river but not the lake. Texoma is a really good catfishing lake too.

This^^ Fish the holes below the dam about an hour after they shut down the generators. The channels will be there. I have a friend that fishes there all the time and he throws a big fish fry party several times a year after 2 or 3 nights of fishing. I've been with him a couple times over the years and it easy fishing. If they haven't run the generators for a few days, just move downriver and fish behind every obstruction you see.

Yeah, I'm older than dirt.
