Looking to purchase my 57 year old dad a kayak. What is a good brand and type? Sit in or sit on? He would mainly crappie or bass fish in a slow moving River. Never kayak fished before

Go check out mariner sails. They have the best selection and experts on the market. They also have a lot of functions where they allow you to play on them.

You really havent provided enough details about your dad & river for us to help you more. I think thats why CM suggested u go talk to a dealer.

I dont live near a dealer. Nearest place that sells them is BPS and academy. He is 5'7" 150lbs. Not sure of what other information you need. I dont know anything about kayaks. Big Cypress Bayou, near caddo lake. 75' wide about 14' deep. Thanks in advance

Being 57+, I am fairly certain your dad has no interest in dragging around 100 lbs of plastic to get in the water. The sit in is generally lighter. The sit on is generally easier to mount/dismount, more comfortable once on the water, but a beast to manage out of the water due to weight. I'd say go for a hybrid like the Native Watercraft Ultimate to get the best of both. All of my experiences with Austin Canoe & Kayak have been positive and they will ship it to your front door.

60 yo here. Just bought a Jackson Coosa and it is a great boat. 11'2" & 75lbs. Wide stable and would make a great bayou boat. Pre-rigged w lots of stuff and real comfortable seat. Check them out.

I have a Commander 120 made by Wilderness Systems. It's a rock stable boat, with a very comfortable seat, and has the elevated captains perch if you want to sit higher. The main reason I was sold on it was the weight. At 68 and bad back and shoulders I couldn't handle a 70+ pound kayak any longer.

Agree. And regarding the weight issue, had trouble getting my beast up a terrace one time and had to empty it and make a few trips. Got home and weighed the seat, a 3-lb anchor, tackle, and a drink and that added up to 25-lbs. You wouldn't think those few scattered items would matter but it does to the pre-geriatric crowd if remote access to the water is going to be a factor.

He should go demo, demo, demo. I have a pair of Native Ultimate 14.5 Tandems, they are about 60 lbs empty, I'm 57 years old and sling them on my shoulder and carry them with no problem. The Native Ultimate 12 is about 50 lbs, that might be something for him to try out.

A Wilderness Commander might b a nice option for dear ol dad. Make the drive for dads sake! I'll tell him u went out of your way! At 150 lbs. he'll fit easily in a smaller/lighter vessel Not all yaks r stable. In fact most smaller /lighter yaks arn't. Dad will come to appreciate the stability of a wider yak especially if he's crappie fishing IMO. BPS also has a nice sit on top or SOT yak made by ASCEND. It comes with a nice elevated seat too. Here is the link. http://www.basspro.com/Ascend-FS12T-SitOnTop-Angler-Kayak-Desert-Storm/product/13110707113412/Looks like BPS also has this paddlers lifevest on sale for $55. hint hint Click here <------------------

Y'all make it sound like 57 years old is very, very old. i'm 62 and have a Cuda 12 and a Wilderness Ride 115. Both have worked out great for this old man! Get your dad out there and get him hooked on kayak fishing!
