Getting a new set up for my b day and narrowed it down to these two. Will put it on a 7' light power fast action rod...either St Croix Panfish or BPS Micro Lite. 10# power pro super slick. Any thoughts or opinions on the reels or rods?

Shimano on the reel...7' medium light on the rod. Hardly any difference in the tip, but the medium light will have a little more backbone.

I use both and have always been a Shimano user but the little Pfluger Trion has a smoother bail closing. If your new rig is going to be dedicated to just crappie fishing these work great and will handle an occasional ditch pickle or catfish.

I have the Pflueger 6925 and the 6940. Both are great reels. I did the same poll a couple years ago, and the recommendations from several TFF'rs with 1000+ posts steered me to Pflueger. That said, I've heard nothing but good things about the Shimano. I continue to be happy with my purchase. Use the 6925 for panfish, and the 6940 for bass.

If you search my posts, you see I caught a 12 lb. catfish with the 6925 last month, and the reel performed like a champ. Pic. Included in that post.

My default is Shimano when it comes to spinning reels but I'm hearing good things about the newest version of the Daiwa Exceler.

I've got 3 Sedona's on my brush pile rigs. Haven't had a single problem.

Love my Shimanos
Haven't tried Pflueger, but heard good things about them.

I have all Sahara's. Highly recommend them for smoothness, light weight and infinite anti-reverse

You can't go wrong either way... cheers

Well, at least I know I narrowed it down to two good choices on the reel. Mainly using this combo for casting jigs and small cranks in my pond...have had med light rods not give me the casting distance but I see the argument for it. Was really eyeing the st croix panfish 7' light action, but should I go med light? Was hoping to have a one peice but willing to look at others.

I think St.Croix spinning rods are great. I think I would go with Medium light unless you will have a net. If you lift a bigger fish on that light action rod... you may be looking at sending it in for replacement.

Shimano on the reel. I have had one for over 10years and never any problems. Great drag and very durable.
