When they have the gates open - are the fish being released too ?
Just wondering how it effects fishing.

I don't know if fish are coming out of the spillway, but I have heard from several people the current that is created by the spillway can slow down fishing across the lake. The fish aren't used to it and expend too much energy trying to remain suspended.

Sorry RHORHO, I've only been coming to CCL for three years, so all my experience is dry lake bed fishing. This will be a good experience for us so we know what to think next time the lake rises.

GoBears870 input sounds like a good theory. But like most things with me and fishing, when i think something the fish usually think something else.

Rhonda I'm sure some fish go through the gates, but that wouldn't be a major impact. I think the weather will have more impact. Two or more gates have been open for over a month and yet I have still encountered the sand bass schooling, etc.

Fish will go downstream with the flow of water. Yes, you will lose fish.

Rhonda, here is my observation from 50 years of fishing. Freshwater fish behave about the same as saltwater estuary fish. They go upstream to feed in shallow water flats when the tide or lake water rises and quickly move back to deeper water when the tide or lake level crests and begins to fall. My totally scientifically unsupported theory behind this is that fish developed this instinct to avoid getting trapped in tide pools. Put another way, all the stupid fish that lounged around in tide pools ended up dead, so Mother Nature selected for the ones that somehow sense the tide change. I don't know if fish go over spillways. My guess is that fish that get caught below spillways are usually trying to swim upstream and congregate at the dead end of the tail race.

I was a Biology major for two semesters so my credentials to give unsupported theories on this forum are impeccable.

as to physically losing fish - no measurable effect - spillway designed to prevent this - the actual overflow over the center of the spillway may take some fish, but not to the point of causing a problem

as to whether the release of water will affect fishing - not much on this lake - it strengthens the man made current that has existed here for years - Tarrant County constantly takes water from this lake, which is why there often seems to be a current despite Cedar Creek being a reservoir with no release point other than the spillway, which is also where the water is taken from normally. basically it will affect how your lure acts, how the fish suspend, and often which direction they face while suspending - like any other current does

like others have said, the drastic recent weather has made the fish somewhat wonky but they will get over it. I actually did pretty well today in a cove before it started raining...again. Hope this helps.
