I am meeting family for a camping trip and have chosen Lake Somerville as a central location. We will be at Nails Creek Park. I have never been on this lake.

Are there any boating hazards such as shoals, rocks, stumps to be aware of?

Of course fishing tips are appreciated but I don't expect you to share your secret spot!

We killed the crappie there a few years ago. We were on the right hand side of the dam about 50' off of the point. Minnows and tube jigs.

When are you going? The lake is almost 4' above normal right now. That would put a lot of new water to navigate if launching ramps are open.

I'll be there Memorial Day weekend at Nails Creek.

lake is now over 8ft high....with more rains predicted!!

We fished there about 2 weeks ago. Launched from Lake Sommerville Marina and the water was so high the walkway to the dock was lapped with water. I guess it was 4 feet high then. Now with 8 ft. big, you'll be walking in late to get to the dock. Its been raining down this part of Texas everyday since about 2 weeks.

I'd probably hold off or go to Lake Conroe where its a larger lake and FM 830 dock or April Plaza Marina might get you a better launch.

Overlook is the only ramp open, and it is underwater. Water is up to the restrooms at the marina. Catfish are biting pretty good though.

Thanks for the info. As long as I can find a place to get my boat in we plan on staying all week. And we will be catfishing.

I am not familiar with where Overlook is but can find it I bet.. I live close to Rayburn and the water is at the top of many ramps but still launch able. My family picked Someville as a central point to meet for a vacation so since some have taken vacation days we are kind of committed here.

What about launching a boat at the marina?

Overlook is the ramp at the marina. Just follow the signs to the ramp. Water is up and covering the parking lot at the marina so you can't go there now. Might be a good idea to call ahead and make sure the marina and Overlook are open. More rain today, and the lake is already 8.5 feet above normal and rising.

Ok thanks. I'll be calling. I wish we had scheduled this vacation for Rayburn as I know the lake well but we wanted to try new places. Looks like there are 11 ramps on Somerville surely something is open. We have camp sites reserved at Birch Creek.

If I were you, I would call ahead.....got another 1" this morning and still coming down.....lake is at 8.78 high and still rising....Lots of camping area's are closed in different parks all over the lake....picnic area's are under water. etc etc...

If we miss fishing Somerville I am going to hate that. Looks like the catfish tactics I use on Rayburn will work well there.

Yep, 10.9 feet high. They had to close the dam on Monday because we got 3 inches of rain downstream of the lake. They just opened the gates back up this morning. Discharge is 1431 cfs flow

Friend over at Birch Creek said the catfish taste muddy but easy to catch shallow cork on CJ's crawfish dip bait.
