I know this is something we have to do in light of all the flooding we have going on with the potential of alot more rain in the coming of days.....So, looks like the Zebra Mussles will be let out of Ray Roberts. What lakes are they headed to?

I guess its inevitable they will make it to all of our lakes....

It is crazy the weather we have had and the rains. Lord knows we have needed it. Glad to see all the lakes full! Maybe this next round can get the lakes in West Texas.

Everything the Trinity River touches, I would imagine.

I think they will be all over in a few years no matter what we do.

Wouldn't hurt my feelings for Livingston to clear up! Will make fishing docks a little more interesting when they are covered in muscles though.

I believe one of the worst potential effects of the zebra muscles with have to do with blue-green algae. Remember a few years ago how Lake Texoma had a huge blue-green algae bloom and it caused a big hype? I don't know that they had anything to do with it back in 2012 when that happened, but research has shown that zebra muscles are expert filter feeders. As they feed they excrete nutrients that encourages blue-green algae growth which is toxic to fish and causes serious stomach issues with people if ingested. This could be detrimental on smaller lakes causing fish kills. Only time will tell.

They do begin to die around 86 degree water temp, so that could be a good thing to help slow them when water temps get hot, but that's usually only surface water and would just push them deeper into he water column.

Other than that they don't seem to bother the fish at all. And likely only helps the fish population. Research has shown that aquatic plants are growing much much deeper than every previously recorded in the great lakes which provides more cover for fish. The smallmouth are growing heavier and heavier up there as the round goby population increases.

I remember that about Texoma. They closed the lake briefly......

Zebra mussels are bad for anyone that has a water pipe coming out of the lake they are in. Expensive for water utilities. Not necessarily bad for fishing.

I think it was "happening" without the release of water, this may just expedite it.

And this is how Zebra Mussels really spread. I would venture to postulate that the ratio of Zebra Mussels within the continental US spread by flood to Zebra Mussels spread by pleasure boats is somewhere in the neighborhood of a billion to one.

PBs

LMB- 11 lbs., 7 oz. Falcon

Striper- 40 lb. Long Is. Sound
BlueCat- 30 lb. Texoma
Hybrid-8.2 lb. Lewisville
Cutthroat Trout-22" Yellowstone R, WY
Rainbow Trout- 21" Blitzen R, OR
Steelhead- 8 lb. Umpqua R, OR
Redfish-20 lb. Panama C. Bay, FL

As Vice-Secretary of the BOMUS (Bureau Of Made Up Statistics), I endorse this figure of a billion to one.
