This bird was following my tractor around yesterday while I mowed. It would light on the ground and eat grasshoppers.

These are the best photos I could get of it.

I have seen cranes and mocking birds follow my tractor, but never a big one like this. I would guess it was 18 inches or so tall.

One of the birds of prey, most likely the red-tail hawk.

Some catch squirrels, snakes, and chipmunks behind my house.

Pretty sure it's a Swainson's hawk. Several hawk species will do that, but Swainson's are pretty notorious for it. This is a dark morph adult but with a lighter belly than the average dark morph. A lot of the hawks are pretty variable in color (at least how dark/light they are).

Swanson, basically a subspecie of the red tail.

Your tractor exposes all the good to eat critters. I ran over a rat mowing at the ranch and killed it. Hawk came and carried it off shortly after.

What I could not believe was this bird was actually following me around. Would sit in tree near where I was mowing then swoop down behind me and walk around on the ground. Not in the least afraid of the tractor. But, when we went to the house for the camera, and walked back toward him... he had none of that. Would fly off. Those photos taken with a 200mm Zoom and then cropped to enlarge it more.

Yeah tractors are loud monotonous and relatively slow and predictable. Critters don't seem to be that afraid of them. We will be shredding and seer deer and they look for a sec and go back to whatever they were doing, on foot, a four wheeler, or truck they run.

I mow fields for a living. Hawks routinely follow me to catch rats and rabbits I kick out. I don't notice them as much on overcast days.
