Do any of you guys ever fish with light gear/line/hooks to fish for catfish? Just wonder if finesse might work on catfish like it often does with bass.

I sometimes use my crappie gear for channel cats when I'm just wanting a few quick little fish for dinner. But most of the time I target big fish.
I would hate to hook a giant fish and lose it because I'm using small gear.

Thanks for the reply spazm09. Small channel cats were primarily what I was thinking about.

For channels I like the lightest and strongest I can get. Usually use spider wire braid, split shot and #4 or #6 treble and small thil slip cork or tightline whichever works best that day. Blues are a different story-----bigger is better.
From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."
Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

They've got some pretty abrasive teeth. You should probably at least have a heavier leader. But lighter line is good for channels because you need to be able to feel the more subtle bites sometimes.

I fish with light tackle for channels 90% of the time! When the wind is very light, I fish with just a #6 treble hook and no lead, using only the punch bait as the weight. when the wind is higher I use a slip cork with a 1/4 oz weight and a #6 treble. All this while using spinning tackle. 6'6 foot medium for corkless, 7+ foot medium for cork, with 6 to 8 lbs mono with a 14 lb mono leader. Loads of fun!

Lite gear is the best way to fish for any kind of fish.. Guess ya dont catch many 30# and bigger blues. Whens the last time ya used 10" whole shad for bait with 10 lb test ? Kinda like takin a knife to a gunfight

That's because I don't fish for blues every often. I tend to fish for box fish year round. Even when I do I still I still tend to use lighter tackle then most, I just dont use heave tackle. I think most people under estamate what there gear will a handl.

Some people love to catch big blues and if that floats your boat,go for it. Personally, I,d rather catch smaller, eating size fish.

I fish for big blues, but what I fish for and what I actually catch are two entirely different things. I usually take my big casting rods out for my shad and I'll throw punch bait out on my medium stuff. Medium with lighter line is fun for catching channels and small blues, and I can keep that stuff in my trunk so if I get a rare opportunity to hit the lake after work I'm already set up and all I have to do is go.

I have changed from mh pro anglers to mediums. I have found that since I very seldom use over a four ounce sinker, the medium action poles are very efficient. They will handle seventy lb fish but still feel a one lber!!
