Good question you should post it in the rough fish section as well see if anyone knows. It might be a tilapia but it is a strange looking one if it is.

After looking at it, it also looks like it could be a cichlid of some kind

Yes it does resemble a cichlid but i thought they couldn't survive in water below 70
|

I have a small pond that I put some cichlids in. They lived until the pond dried up.

I've been looking around and I think it is a red devil cichlid hybrid of some sort.

There are native cichilds in Texas. The Rio Grande Cichild from far south texas. Looks like a petstore fish that was released back to nature lol

Its funny, I saw this post and when I picked my daughter up from daycare I looked in their fish tank and saw the exact same fish. I'll try and get a picture and post it to show they are the same. This was a pet fish that was released.
