Catching a carp on a rod and reel is a recent addition to my bucket list. I've read about throwing out a few cans of corn and then threading corn onto a small hook---I got that part.

My question is: Any advantage to throwing corn out in advance, like the night before? I have carp in my pond (or I should), and I'm thinking about trying in the morning if I have time. If chumming the night before helps, I'll throw some out tonight.

If they'll just eat the corn tonight and move on, meaning all I'm doing is wasting my corn, I'll wait until the morning.

Chumming helps for sure. I have found if it's smaller water fish will find it within a few hours.

I threw 2 cans of corn out around 7 this morning. Around noon I put out a 1/8 oz Carolina rig with a very small hook threaded with corn that Id poured a little vanilla over. I also put out a tiny circle hook on a Carolina rig with one of those strawberry prepared dough baits. I let them sit for about 30 minutes while I worked on a hoopnet I'm making, but I didn't have any luck.

This was the first time I fished for carp and the first time I used the rod holders I've had for years. I'll definitely be trying again. I want to catch a carp!

Have you ever seen carp in the pond? About how big is it? Often times if there are carp in a pond you will see them jumping or splashing the surface. Another good chum that lasts pretty well is range cubes. You may have to start chumming for a couple of days in advance to maybe get the fish to hold in the area.

Pond was 2.5 acres when it was prime. It's probably 1.5 now. There's a hole in the levee, and the water has gone down quite a bit. It's still at least 6 ft deep in places. There has to be carp. 20 years ago we'd catch 10lb carp on trotlines fairly often. We set a gill net one weekend and caught about 15 of them, but that's been years.

What got me interested in trying to catch one is I saw what was probably carp a few days ago, large wake and a lot of action in some alligator weed....it kept stirring up the area. Could have been a bass, but it seemed to me like it was a carp.

I might continue chumming them... I'd love to get one on a rod n reel. I have a 6500 with a clicker, so it's nice for free spooling....the other reel I used was 1000 series stradic with 6 lb mono. I would have had my hands full for sure! I just turned the drag wayyyyy down....didn't want to leave the bail open, I wouldn't have heard it going

Better strategy is to throw out 2-3 cans of corn at the same spot, same time, for about 3 days (or more) in a row and then on the next day, don't chum but fish the same spot, same time (with the corn on small hooks) and....hold on.

Can dry field corn be used, like from a feed store, or does it need to be sweet corn? I was thinking that I could do a whole lot of chumming if I bought a 50 lb bag. I could sour it if needed, that should soften it up.

Deer corn is fine. You do need to soak it a while to soften it. If you want you can take some and boil it to soften it and then add flavoring like powdered strawberry koolaid to the pot of boiled corn as it cools. This type of corn stays on hooks very well.

This is a great advice. When I lived in NJ, we used to go to the lake everyday (Mon-Fri) and throw a can or two of sweet corn in the water. Then we would go fishing on Saturday and we would always catch carp and a lot of them. So chum each day and then go fishing. When you fish, throw another can of corn around where your hook is.
