I've been looking to get a good fishing kayak for bay and beach fishing. Been looking at the Pelican Icon 100X Angler Fishing Kayak from Academy Sports. I want to know if any of you guys know of a better one for a low price. Preferably 10ft with 3 rod holders and lots of storage. Any advise Is much appreciated.

i fished with a friend who had on of those. It was ok for the $$$. He is small though, how big are you?

If you can save your pennies and get the pescador, or even save more and get something used in the $500 range, you may be happier.

I'm 6ft but skinny and limber. When you say 'ok' what does that mean.

Highly considering purchasing this same kayak as well, seems good for the price, like the features on it, This will be my first yak and I think it will be great for a beginner yak to get started.

Wouldn't have any kayak that Pelican makes. There are much better choices.

Find someone who has a kayak like you are thinking about buying and go out in that kayak before you buy it. It may not be the best match for you and I don't know of any stores selling Pelican that will let you demo before you buy. When I was first in the market for a kayak I found a Pelican sit with paddle and fish finder in for $175. I bough the Pelican used it twice and then moved up to a Wilderness 115 and then added a Jackson Cuda 12 to my fleet. Start with what you can afford and if you like kayak fishing save your pennies and move up to more suitable fishing kayaks as you can afford them. Also, go to the demo days many of the local kayak dealer have and demo as many kayaks as you can. Hang in there you will find the kayak you are looking for.

Short and stubby kayaks without rudders won't track well. This will wear you out because your paddle stroke isn't as efficient. If you were going to use it to float down a creek I would say go for it. If you plan to use it on big water I would recommend something longer, leaner. Bottom line, the pelican will get you off the bank but you'll be looking for something better pretty soon once the kayaking bug kicks in.

Yes more money gets you more yak but IMHO it matters more about how much you will actually use the yak.

For occasional use just about anything will do but like most of the guys on here I'll fish just about any time any place and have been very happy with my 15 years old, Old town loon 111.

The kayak market today has so many choices! To find the "perfect" fitting kayak is possible but there is always something better..

If you are like me, once you pull the trigger on a yak you better be happy with it because you ain't getting another one any time soon so we just make it work..

My yak is light and fast minimally loaded compared to the battleyaks many anglers push around. The older I get the less junk (gear) I take with me in the yak as I just don't see the sense in taking anything with me that I'm not likely to use.. of course that assumes you know what gear and tackle is likely to work best on the water you are fishing..

I was able to get a field and stream eagle talon on sale at dicks sporting goods for under 400 bucks. Stock seat sucks but after I replaced that I have been very pleased with it.

I did the same thing last year. Great deal for everything you get. Definitely need to upgrade the seat. I haven't done that yet, but for a few hours on the water, it isn't terrible.
