First off, a spincast reel is a closed face like a Zebco or Johnson. I think you're asking for tips on spinning reels, right?

Sorry, I don't own a spinning reel. But there are tons of guys on here who use them all the time. Especially Lake Fork tourney anglers trying to catch unders. I'm sure some of them will offer you some good info.

Lake Fork guides Zach Hughes, Eric Wright and Cody Malone are experts. So are Billy and Kay Dyson. Billy's handle is Redskeeter on here.

Not much to it, just keep the line size appropriate to the reel size you are using. I don't go over an 8-10 lb diameter. I personally use 200 size Lew's Tournament reels. I use 30 pound power pro braid on them. I use a 10- 12 lb fluorocarbon leader in clear water or ultra finesse presentations. I've discovered that the thin diameter braid doesn't deter many bites, if any in most situations. I only use the spinning gear a little. If you cannot skip a baitcaster, rig up with 30 lb braid, something with some bulk that'll skip, and skip it around cypress trees and docks. Make sure that you have the power rod required for what you are doing.

You can always use a baitcasting rod and reel, just have to have the right rod, and drop the line weight down from what you normally use. I use a baitcaster for drop shot and shakey head, I don't think the fish know that I have a baitcaster vs a spinning set up....

I am right there with you. Recently picked up a new Lews combo spinning, and I haven't used one in so long and I can't cast it for $#!+. Will need a lot of practice! But, for veritcal finesse techniques, it spools off better than my bait casters.

Close the bail by hand, not by turning the handle to engage. It saves wear and tear on the reel. When you get too much line twist, throw out as far as you can, pinch the line close to the rod with your index and thumb and reel back. Do this about every 10-15 casts and it will help with twisting.

Ok fellas this is what I'm wanting to set as a main rig for my spinning gear. DROP SHOT action. Is this a good rig? Opinions please. Funny ones...sarcastic ones...bad ones. Don't matter I need them ALL lol. I love all personalities.

Better flouro-carbon like Invizx and use an actual drop-shot weight, instead of egg sinkers, but that setup will get you bit.

Many good points already made. I wince when I see someone close the bail with the handle instead of by hand. Or, bury the line too far down on the trigger finger.

I'd only add that you should watch Captain Chris Myers out of Florida explain spinning tackle and why it is prevalent (and preferable) down there for those fishing applications:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd-By7YiiIs

Then, watch all of his other videos on spinning tackle technique which will explain where your hands should be (and why), finger placement, casting patterns, etc. He also has a video on the merits of light braid with leaders.

My personal suggestions? Use this as your finesse rig, so great for most plastics for sure and those related techniques. It is does well for light lures, too, but forget about using it for heavy stuff. Its advantages are related to the light side for freshwater apps.

I have a Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 2500 series mounted to a 7' medium action, fast tip St. Croix, and I normally have Sufix Elite 8 lbs. mono on it. That combo is sort of dead center in the range of finesse applications. I could go down to 4 or 6 test, or up a bit, but 8 works well.

And, I'd recommend a medium action rod as the heaviest action for freshwater, not a medium/heavy or greater. Use those for baitcasting stuff.

I have a Lews BB2 baitcaster on a St Croix, certainly better for other applications . . . but if I turn my vessel over and my rods/reels begin to sink, I am going to dive for and try to save the spinning tackle.

Brad

Personally, definitely go with the drop shot weights, save time on re-tying. I use a swivel (small barrel swivel) above the hook a good bit (maybe a 18-24 inches (I mostly flip rather than cast it, but you can do both), it eliminates a lot of the line twist. I pre rig several sets so all I have to do is tie one knot at the swivel to the main line and add a weight.

How do you store the other rigs? Maybe like a swimming tube or something?
