I have a trip coming up at the end of June and I have never wet a line in the coast. We are planning to stay in corpus. I have plenty of catfish rods and takle just not to sure about the rest of it.
Leader- what do y'all recommend?
I have a bunch of 2oz no roll sinkers Are these heavy enough?
Hooks- I usually keep 5-8/0 gama circle hooks in the boat.
I plan to use live bait but would take recommendations on plastics as well
Planning to take my Kayak along with me also. Any suggestions on that would be great.

First are you bay fishing or surf fishing? Live Croaker or Piggy perch are great live bait that time of year. Free line them with no weight.

Most likely bay fishing. I'm also planning on bringing my kayak along. Thanks Mike.

Leave the catfish rods behind. Bring fly rods. Hit the flats.

Bait: Live shrimp or croakers

Soft plastics: plum/chartreuse or glow/firetail

Structure: shell reefs for trout, grasslines/grassbeds for reds

jigs: 1/16 or 1/8 Rockport Rattler jigs

Dont forget a popping cork and live shrimp. One of the easiest ways to get fish on the deck.

Yep - Capt. Andrew is right.

I like the Alameda Rattling Cork, the 3 1/2" model w/ 18 - 22" of mono leader.

I have a 3 page article I wrote on the best way to rig it and use it in my WadeFish Rockport Book.

To build on this some:
Bone Spook Jr topwater
Strawberry/White & Rootbeer(aka TX Roach or Pumpkinseed)/Chartreuse soft plastics will cover most water conditions
1/4oz Weedless Johnson Gold spoon

That would be a pretty solid artificial starter kit.

Wash your gear down good after a trip to salt water, and change your line when you get back as part of the cleaning. Lots of salt on that spool. Best of luck and be safe!cheers

dont over think it your baass fishing tackle will work fine,i like spinning rods better than bait casting in salt water.get some popping corks with thirty pound leader about 2 ft. long 1/8 oz. jig and you favorite color gulp and go to town casting.best to use15 lb.power pro you can handle just about any thing that swims with this setup.

One thing about salt water fishing when you catch one you don't know if you can eat it or it will eat you. LOL
