I tried wieners one time for catfish bait and didn't have any luck. But recently I saw a video where a guy was using a special tool to thread a wiener onto his leader and pull it down over his hook, he used a whole wiener. He happened to mention that the wiener had been laying un-refrigerated for a few days before he used it, i.e. let it get ripe and stink. It had never occurred to me I needed to do that. So, wanted to ask if any of you guys use ripened wieners for catfish bait, and if you use a whole wiener, or cut off pieces of it? Secondly, what about shrimp for bait? Is it a good bait? It's been a long time since I've fished for cats, but I want to get back to it and could use a few tips.

I have use wieners and had a lot of success on them at Joe Pool right in front of the Restaurant.! The thing that makes the difference is the kind of wiener. You should make sure they are a chicken wieners though. The cheapest you can find & you can let them cure if you want but I never did and I caught a bunch. 2cents

There are so many baits that so work well when they are the freshest, that I'm kind of skeptical of letting stuff rot. I mean, fresh shad, or old shad? Fresh chicken breast, or let it stink up? I don't think anyone would suggest not using either those fresh.

I don't know. I think some of these things people do are because they know catfish hunt by scent, but our noses are not the same as theirs. Some people think it has to smell bad to humans to be attractive to them. But whatever works, I guess. Not bashing a bait that someone has good luck on, I'm just skeptical.

Hey Fishbonz, appreciate the information, especially about kind of wiener. Did you use a whole dog on the hook or chunks? Secondly, what has been your experience with shrimp?

I always figured the blood in chicken liver is what attracts cats, so the fresher the better, but that's just my thinking, I don't know. With cut bait or shad, I don't even have a guess since I have no experience with either. I know a lot of people like punch bait for channel cat, but when I tried it years ago it washed off of my hook so fast, and I didn't catch anything, so I lost confidence in it.

I would only use about a 1" chunck on an eagle claw hook as for the shrimp.....best blue gill & sun fish bait I `ve ever seen. Just cut up into small pieces with scissors and put on long shank cricket hooks under a bobber.

Chemdog, in the video I saw, the guy was using something like a crochet needle to thread the leader through the wiener like you said. Neat trick. I'll try soaking chunks in fresh garlic, another good tip.

Fishbonz, I had never heard about using shrimp for bluegills/sunfish. Will try that too. This has been a good thread.

By the way Chemdog, do you know what size hooks to use with the wieners?

The cheap kind cut them in about 1/2 to 3/4 inch put them in the microwave oven at hi for about 30 seconds then pull them out look at them and do the same thing again when they start to feel a little more rubbery tough then add what ever garlic, old bacon grease, what ever but nuking them helps stay on a hook better

Been catching spawning channel cats with Bar S hot dogs (.99 per pack) fishing with bobbers shallow around weeds. The hot dogs were out doing the shrimp. These were fresh with nothing added to them. We tried them for the first time last year with great results. Just pinch off a piece for the size hook your using. I use a #2 eagle claw hook.

When I was a kid I used to use grilled hotdogs and they worked batter than the uncooked ones. Got to get all that grease that is in there out and flowing. The fresher off the grill the better. I was of course bank fishing.
