Working on a Gizzard shad pattern. Understanding that many variables control the coloration of forage fish we have these pictures for reference. Which one do you think best represents Gizzard shad in our state? texas
1.
2.
3.
If these don't represent....feel free to submit your own picture. Thanks to all who respond to this.

I think #3; but I would talk to some of the guides on Texoma who throw the nets to catch bait for the big Striper. They can tell you real quick.

top one but bigger with more pink. our gizzards commonly get over 16 inches long. yall should spend a night volunteering for tpwd doing the shock surveys. you'll then know exactly what the forage looks like.

I'm curious to see what you come up with, gizzard shad are the primary forage in the lake I fish and I need to spend some time coming up with a good one as well.

I'm thinking my dirty bone pattern isn't far off just need a little tweaking. Maybe add the some iridescent pink to the bottom tail section and a tiny bit of iridescent purple to the gill area.

The best I have came up with is 8 drops of folk art sterling silver and 3 drops of createx pearl platinum. I'm all ears if your new paint color works out. I bet I need to buy more paint lol.

yep. you need to clear coat the silver leaf before you put any other colors on. the bare leaf tends to dull the colors. it looked ok. i did some in a hurry just to see what it would look like. also did some in gold leaf.

Thanks for posting your work BC....the coloration of the top one looks close to picture #2. Maybe clear coating the lure before painting would be the solution for the silvery sides like seen in picture #1. The bottom lure (blue/yellow/silver)with the textured sides is very close...I just don't have the knowledge or skills to foil one like that. That foil job over a textured lure blank with the brownish copper back and shoulders..pinkish fade along the anal fin area...a purplish fade over the kill dot area...a touch of burnt orange on the tip of the nose and jaw.....a kill dot and a few rows of faint darker horizontal dots along the upper back then finished with a dusting of iridescence over the back.....IMHO would "kill" a Gizzard shad paint schedule. Wish I had the skills to pull it off. texas

My mission: Apply silver foil to a lure blank.
My results: Found one day later...broken pencil and suicide note with some rambling message about glue and foil.... sarcastic
Gotta' practice a lot more before I get it right
