Went out today with my son who had a blast as we caught 37 cats. Here lies the issue, every one of them was under 6 inches. We tried 8 different spots and found fish evertime just no legal ones. I was using a #4 treble hook. Should I go to a bigger hook, or anything else Im not thinking of? I appreciate any info. Still a novice with the fishing. Thank you.

What lake were you at?
Did you try different depths?
Did you try different bait?

Lake Grapevine. Started shallow 5ft or so, went into 20ft and went all the way to 45ft. Had stubby's bait, sudden impact, and cut carp. Ripped cast net going after shad this morning.

Sounds like you tried a variety of good options. 37 fish, big or small, is still a good day fishing. For bigger fish I'd definitely try some fresh cut shad on 5/0 - 8/0 circle hooks. Use different sizes on the cut shad to see what they prefer that day.

BrianTx01 fishes grapevine, maybe he can chime in with some tips.

I personally focus on bigger fish (10+lbs). Sure catching smaller fish is still fun but I want the big ones so having to reel in a small fish rebait and recast seems like a waste of time. Now I only use big chunks of cut bait that only a big fish can handle. I get far less bites but when I do they are nice fish.

I would suggest using a circle hook and cut bait or shad.

Later in the day I swapped to a 6/0 circle hook once we got the carp. Just couldnt get a bite on the blues. Went to Academy last night and got a new cast net. Yesterday when my net tore had about 40-50 shad that got to live to fight another day.

Grapevine skunked me again today as well. Managed to get one longnose about 4-1/2 ft long on a bluegill and noodles. Best part of the day was coming back to the ramp and a oriental guy had 6 rods out on the curtsey ramp. As I was coming in at idle he kept waving his arms hollering rines, rines my rines. Not knowing what that meant I just kept on coming in. Managed to get 4 of them rines and then politely informed him that this was not a fishing dock. I guess I will leave Grapevine alone for a while. Got to pull my prop now and make sure there isn't any mono around the shaft.

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."

Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

West end of GV is a dangerous place for props and lower units right now.

if I catch 4-5 drinks in a row i now move to a new spot I had the same problem the last time i went to lime stone the warmer it gets the more active they seem to become. If your fishing with any kind of Dough bait fiber or punch bait you just have to get use to it. Those little guys love that stuff

Surprisingly it wasn't too busy out there, other than the usual sail boats near the dam.

8/0 hooks are the best cure for dinks I know. Grapevine is a fickle beast. I would try fresh cut shad on the west end of the lake.

Our pontoon is at Scott's Landing. Tell you what, 5 minutes and some dough bait will get you all the carp you want. Shad is pretty plentiful as well. I love this new cast net I got. Anglers warehouse is my new favorite tackle shop. I don't mind if I pay a little more for the customer service and knowledge. Super nice guys.
