Planning a trip to Galveston mid June for my first try at shark fishing. I'll be fishing from a Yak and was looking for some advise for launch sites close to good fishing. Looks like I'll be fishing my blue cat rods with 6/0 circle hooks on 50lb mono with 6' 100lb steel leader. Thinking two on the bottom and two under a balloon. Fresh cut mullet sounds like the best bait. For my bottom rigs I'm thinking my blue cat set up should work. It allows your weight to be on bottom as bait floats 1'-3' up off the bottom. Just not sure how currents my affect this set up. Sounds like I need to be in the ditch past the third sandbar if the clear water has pushed that close. Does anyone create a chum slick? Any pointers or advise would be Greatly Appreciated.

Don't know nothing about shark fishing, but I'd fish with some 8/0 or 9/0 hooks instead of 6/0, that's just me personally though

agreed about the hook size. Ive had catfish break 6/0 hooks. Make sure you also find a person or a group familiar with the area you want to target. The wisdom of others first hand can help a bunch.

Your reel will hold more line if u use braid. U will need more line when u hook a big one. Rig up a quick release for your anchor line so u dont get spooled. I have used power pro main line successfully w/400-500# leaders. a shark can bite threw 100# cable. I think your leader length Is ok for smaller sharks.
13-16 O circle Hooks r what we use most while btb.. File the barb down so u can retrieve your rig and release your fish without a lip ring. the link in my signature sells everything u need. BigSharkTackle
ships fast and cheap. They r also a local supplier. Look for their kayak leaders. I use gloves and a hand gaft to handle/subdo em. Free lining cut baits is a good tech too. :-D I recommend u only use 1 pole at a time till u get the feel for their speed n power ;-) hope u land a good one!

Heres the yak rig I recommend. http://bigsharktackle.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=49_51&products_id=107 add a weight at the swivel for bottom fishing. Free line it or attach a balloon.
If current is decent it will bring all your lines together. Your gonna need to watch and manage them or wish u would have. High island and mcfadden areas r producing already

If you can catch a small southern stingray a chunk of that is good bait. yhr best bait is a piece of spanish mackeral but spanish mackeral is a gamefish so don't do that.
