A few friends and I put into Kings Creek at 274 and headed upstream about 2 weekends ago and threw everything from jigs to minnows on bobbers, after about 6 unfruitful hours we headed to Lacey. again with nothing to show. I work in the ER in Athens and a patient was telling me he thought that the gar being so dense in the shallow is keeping all the other fish at bay(or further out to be more accurate). im new to the forum and thought this would be a worthy first post. Looking forward to everyones input!

Limits were caught 30 to 45 days ago up those creeks and others. Black crappie spawn earlier with the water temps in the mid 50's and up. You might see a push of white crappie with this full moon. I do catch crappie and gar out of the same cover year around, I assume they are both feeding on shad. I have only seen alligator gar run a school of crappie off. Just what I have seen.

Good luck.

Just my opinion But... I have caught crappie shallow every spring for over 70 years and I have always found gar (and usually carp) sharing the same water the whole time. Crappie fishing is as good or better now than it has ever been.

Dont worry, mother nature is pretty tough.

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Shallow carp and gar will not affect those crappie at all. We've caught crappie right in amongst them for years. Those creeks on Cedar Creek have been blown out repeatedly this spring, and are not going to put out the numbers of fish that they have in years past. Hopefully the lake levels will remain up over the summer/fall to set things up nicely for Spawn 2016.

Fish are holding deep ( 12ft ) and still have eggs. Yes I have caught some in 1 ft of water but not many. The gates have been open so that my guess on why they are confused.
