So my wife and I went down to Mexico earlier this year for vacation. I thought what a great opportunity to try fly fishing for Bone fish. We are both novice fly fishers. Here is my lesson learned. You really need to have mastered the double haul fly cast before you go. The ability to cast into the wind and make a long cast are critical. Glad I didn't spring for a guided flats boat trip. I would have been embarrassed. Ah but now I know this and will be better prepared for the next trip.... and I'll spring for a guide as well. The trip was still fantastic. No bone but caught other small fish while wading out and fly fishing as a novice. Highly recommended.

We all learn something every trip... casting into the wind is important whether one fishes fly rod or conventional tackle... good skill to use, and many times makes the difference between going home a hero and going home empty handed.

Thanks for the report.

I like to take the Fly anglers to redfish country down here in S. Texas.

I bet your fishing trip to Mexico was a blast and now your home safe with good stories to tell !

The double haul is used on every cast for me. I use it in rivers and out on the flats. It will take 5 mins to learn with a good teacher. Also try to up the line weight one size to your rod. I run a 9 weight line on a 8 weight rod. It loads up really quick,.
