I have a Heaton super sensitive jig pole, the butt is a bit too long. What is the best way to cut down the butt a few inches? The handle is cork.

Cutting down the butt will make it softer a litter action. I am not sure why you would want to do this. But if you have a hack saw go for it.

Hack saw works just fine. The rod blank extends thru the handle. If you can work the butt cap off, you may be able to re-use it. Cutting the handle a little shorter will affect the action very little, but it will affect the rods balance. Shortening the tip as little as one inch can greatly affect the rods action making it feel stiffer.

No way would I take any off the tip, but have several that I have cut the butt down. Just take the cap off and cut it like you want it. On all spin cast rods I place my hand in front of reel and if you don't it may not work for you.

Cutting disc on a grinder works really well. The butt cap may not come off if it were paste epoxied like the rest of the cork. You could buy another one, but it may take some work to get it to fit. If you want to leave it as is after cutting, you can sand down the cork you cut (the drop) and mix with paste epoxy or glue and fill the blank void with this. Or wrap the new end of the butt with tape (creating a cup), and use this cork/epoxy mixture to make your own butt cap.

I cut down the but end of one of my PA's for slip/barge fishing. Turned out pretty good. Like said above just remove the butt cap, and insert it back when you're done cutting.

Crappieking95,

My future plans included cutting down either a CrappieMaxx or P.A. 8' ft for the same reason (use) you stated. I am pairing it up with a Wally Marshall Solo crappie reel.
