Landed 17. All large males, 1 to 3 ft. of water in the cat tails. It was a pretty wild morning fishing those reeds. Drop it straight down and if thumped, yank 'em straight up and sling into the boat. If there had been anyone else with me, a slab slap to the side of the head would have been a definite possibility.
When in doubt, set the hook

Nice job! I caught some nice males on the outside of the reeds Sunday with a jig & cork about 2.5' deep. Females were out a little further.

I fished the reeds all morning on fork that day on minnows 1 to 3 foot of water, not one bite. I tried deep as well, even found a brush pile.

nice looking slabs u got there.what was the choice of bait? Being slapped by a slab will definitely get anybodys attention! welcome to the forum! Thanks. 1/8 oz. jigs, white body, chartreuse tail. Water was pretty muddy, so didn't get a bite out away from the reeds. Was dropping it straight down in the cat tails with a 10 ft. pole. Wait ten seconds then drop it two feet to either side. When one thumped me it was pretty comical. The only way to get them out of there was by airlift.
When in doubt, set the hook

I wasn't dropping right in the reeds, maybe that was my problem. Might have to try with a jig in the reeds this weekend. I was going to wade some with jig pole, but so many dang snakes thought I would stay in the boat.

You guys have found one of my fishing spots, about a week ago the big females were still in there. In a place like that I wade using a number 4 hook with 1/48 head [slow fall] as all ways on fork, chart/black.
