I keep breaking knots on my fluoro what knots do you use. Looking for loop knot.
Thanks.

What kind of floro? There is a possibility you may have gotten a bad spool if you were tying a Palomar knot often times on the two pieces go through the eye of the hook they will cross They need to be side-by-side if they are crossed on a hard Hookset they can cut each other and break.

I agree with testing the spool - maybe a bad one. For a loop, I like the non-slip mono loop. For a direct tie, I prefer the Orvis knot. The only real difference between floro and mono I've noticed is the need to seat the floro extra tight. cool

In this life there is fly fishing and tying...and then there is all that other stuff in between that doesn't matter.

Make sure to wet the knot when pulling tight.

+1 on wetting the knot before pulling tight. It is very important.

I usually use an improved cinch knot. If done right it doesn't fail. The only problem is the knot is very big if you make 5 or 6 turns.

If using big flies with big hook eyes I might go to a palomar knot.

I use floro leaders when I fish subsurface and monofilament leaders for top water flies. If I am lazy and tying on a lot of different flies I use the Davey knot. I have lost lots of flies using that knot though. Not only on floro but also when using 6 lb. test monofilament. The smaller lines are tougher to get good knots tied.

For either fluorocarbon or monofilament loops I use the nonslip loop knot. It's never failed me yet. Always lubricate any knot as you draw it tight.

I always lube the knots. The spool may be bad. It was a spool from cabellas 7lb.. Maybe just too cheap stuff. I messed with it last night just seems breaks very easy. The knots I use are non slip, perfection loop, canoe loop, or tarpon loop. It has failed just a above the knot on all of them. I have a old spool of 7lb mono (several years old) and it feel no stronger.
I was thinking how bad could the cabellas stuff be vs high end stuff. Figured it came from same place diff name.

I am all for the improved clinch. If I go over 7 lb I only use seagar invisix it I the only stuff I will put on my bass reels. Under that rio floroflex the only time I ever tried cabelas brand floro it was returned. I will never forget that I first broke it out on the famed Fryingpan River. It was an amazing day But I had broke off five or six massive trout and finally asked my buddy for a piece of tipit he had floroflex that I normally used. I never broke another fish off and was the only time I gave that stuff a try. I was really shocked as I have a lot of faith in most Cabelas products. So you might try change.

UV light breaks down the line, it could be old, sun brittle, or just a bad batch.

Flouro is high....I used Vicious for conventional fishing and large heavy flies (larger line). The smallest they make is 6lb. Vicious did have a bad batch about 4-5 years ago and it got a bad name....but it was just one run. I keep mine inside and it last for couple years.

I don't get into the high end lines.....bass fishing we used too much of it.

I still can't get myself to go high end on fly fishing either.....atleast not yet...but I stay away from certain brands...house brands are one of them.

With fluorocarbon leaders and tippets, as with anything, you get what your pay for. The best fluoro, according to fly fishing magazine tests, are Seaguar and Trouthunter. They are pricey, but worth it. I am especially impressed with the Trouthunter tippet material, which comes in half sizes (4.5x, 5.5x, 6.5x). Used it exclusively on a recent trip to the San Juan, with good results.

While I do agree with you, there is a point where 10lb line is 10lb line...whether it was $30 a spool or $100 a spool. It takes 10 lbs to break it.

Looking at some Japanese line you might need to take a bank loan to afford it.
