ok so boat will start, idle and rev to mid range fine... but its like the top jets wont open... Dirty jets that aren't opening all the way? I tend to run the motor a little rich, maybe I gummed it up?
I have had this issue one other time. We got on pad and it was just cruising but I had the HAMMER DOWN. then all of a sudden it TAKES off gets way more power and speed... I assumed the jets were having issues. but if this is a bad diagnosis then let me know what u think

Sounds like it may be Sea Foam time.

If it were a car it sounds like the power valve in the carburetor sorry I'm not familiar with boat carbs.

Sounds like it may be Sea Foam time. SOMEBODY EXPLAIN HOW THIS STUFF WORKS LOL It has directions on the can. Could be lots of things, but sounds like a fuel restriction of some kind to me. If you don't know much about boat motors it might be wise to take it somewhere. No faster way to cooking a powerhead than running it lean.

Running it lean in what regaurd? In oil? No I typically run it rich, maybe too rich, i think thats the issue. Or do you mean running it lean as far as not getting enough fuel.
Its a late 80's early 90's evenrude... i"ll get model number... I dont know off hand

If one carb is not feeding then that cylinder is getting reduced oil along with fuel. I do not know Evinrudes but Mercs have cross feed so you have some lubrication.

Could be fuel related or it could be a bad power pack. I've had 90 model evinrudes that I thought had fuel issues and it turned out to be the power pack almost every time. It acted just like you are describing. Wants to get on plane but is only getting about half throttle. Some times it will go ahead and take off but the next time it might not. Run some mechanic in a bottle from home depot thru it. Follow the instructions closely. If that doesn't fix the problem take it to someone who has a peak reading volt meter and let them check the power pack.

I've got an 88 Rude, try hooking up the water hose at home and running it while spraying Sea Faom in there at mid to high idle. More than likely, it'll work.
