Well I guess about the only thing I can consistently do good is a splatter back with the brush. I like the random pattern you can get from the brush, the way I do it is pull back on the trigger 2 times to load the needle the just the slightest tap down. That will give it the splatter effect. It takes a little practice to get it down but once you get comfortable with it you can do a lot of baits quickly. You can play with distance from the bait to get different splatter effects, also pulling back on the trigger a different number of times will change the volume of splatter. I usually clear my gun out every minute or so, just to make sure I'm not getting too much paint built up in the noozle.

Some of us haven't even started spraying yet. So please post whatever you have for the new guys. For the new guys.....try looking at an unpainted blank from top to bottom.....back to belly. Top 1/3rd =back....Middle 1/3=sides....Lower 1/3=belly. Maybe you only need two colors.....in that case its back=1/3rd and sides=2/3rd...you get the idea. SO what colors do you want on the upper, middle and lower 1/3rd for your pattern? Start in the middle(sides)....spray the entire bait that color. Turn the bait over....spray the top(back) color with the brush centered on the backbone.....then turn it over and spray the lower(belly) color the same way. The distance and angle you hold the brush from the back & belly will determine how far up & down the sides that the back/belly color will overspray. You now have a base for a three color (or two if you prefer) pattern. Build on it...experiment around. Hope this helps some of the new folks out.

This is how I get powder pigment to spray... Are you using the acrylic floor shine as a thinner or is the Pearl EX only a powder without a carrier? Looks very interesting.....good tip

Looks very interesting.....good tip Pearl Ex is only a powder... I just pour a splash of the acrylic floor shine straight into my guns cup then add a little pigment to it, then I stir and backwash it a few times to mix it before I spray.

Getting tired of testing patterns and colors on your new blanks? Try this: Undercoat a couple of blanks then clear coat them with D2T, MCU or whatever. You can use them over and over to practice or test colors, patterns, etc. No need to prep or tape off. When you're done just soak them in warm soapy water and scrub the paint off with a stiff brush. They're ready for more and you aren't using a new blank to test with, so who cares if the test was an epic fail. Best not to heat set the colors...makes them harder to scrub off. Don't want to use a real blank, no problem, get a piece of 1-2" diameter PVC pipe, cut it off about 3 or 4 inches long, clear coat it with D2T, MCU or whatever. Same deal as with the lure blanks. Its easy to place scale mesh on it and its about the same size and shape as an unpainted blank. Makes an excellent tool for practice or testing your airbrush ideas.

making scales. I know to use mesh as a stencil to make them, but I am having trouble with the base coat getting messed up. I make sure it is heat set before putting the mesh on, and heat set the scale pattern before taking the mesh off. Suggestions?

when you say "messed up" what's happening to the base coat?
