I know this may be a dumb question but what are slabs? TPWD fishing reports say hybrids are good or fair on slabs,,, whites are good on slabs,,, exactly what are slabs?

Basically a slab is a piece of lead with a hook on it. No reason to pay any more than you have to.

The SSS from Moe's has been real good to me as has the Godfather in the smaller sizes.

Not a dumb question at all. Slabs are generally used for jigging straight up and down, when you are over a school of white bass also called sand bass or hybrid bass or striped bass. They are heavy so you can drop them straight down 15, 20, 30 + feet. You can cast them and retrieve them but depending on the bottom that can get you hung up easily. Sometimes once you figure out what depth the fish are at you can just put the rod in a rod holder or hold it still (called deadsticking) and the rocking of the bottom will give it enough action to draw strikes.

I also agree, you don't need to pay a fortune, since you are generally lifting them up from the bottom, you will get hung up and lose a few.

Another good read is how Dennis Christian's Mepps Spinner Technique for whites using inline spinners like Mepps.

good luck.

Thanks everyone for showing me the light. Sounds like a fun way to catch them. Now I just need someone with a boat to take me out to Lake Palestine and help me catch some on slabs. LOL

The RSR site is kind of slick? These posts are always fun. Reminds me of the good old days!

Let's not forget about the Ole Ugly's.
Very good slab with a unique action.
