I just put a new trolling motor on my boat and was told that it had to be tuned. Is it necessary and if so how hard is it to be done

Not sure if it matters but I think he was talking about the foot control

Tuning a trolling motor? Never heard of such a thing, but with all the new multi-feature TM's out there now that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Sounds kinda like being low on blinker fluid to me.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

I think what they mean is timed, not tuned. You can have the control box (Head) positioned anywhere you'd like but will have to time the pinion drum inside the control box so that you get the full 360degree turning

so that the foot pedal is parallel to the deck when you want to go straight ahead and be able to turn it fully in either direction

For the timing, I have the procedure under my FAQ on my website. Some guys have watched a YouTube video about tuning one that involves loosening the brush holder/com cap and turning the skeg to make it run better. DON'T do it. You're changing the relationship between the brushes, and magnets and will change the amp draw.
