You couldn't give me anything from Pelican. The Heritage angler isn't much better. Both of these have low back seats. There are a lot better choices out there even in the low end of the kayak price selection pool.
RealBigReel I don't go too fast but I go pretty far.

Keep an eye on Craig's List. You can get something really decent for $500.

There are also a couple of kayak swap meets coming up at Mariner Sails you might be able to find a deal at.

Don't forget you'll be spending money on a paddle and PFD if you don't already have them. Better to save your money for awhile and get something decent than to get something on the cheap you won't be happy with.

the people at Mariner are awesome, really is no pressure, try all the kayaks, even if you dont buy new, you will have a better idea of what to look for on the used market. The elevated seats are SO MUCH MORE comfortable for long periods of fishing that you really need to consider them. Good luck

Check out academy. I just picked up a preceptiaon striker 11.5 for my boy for $274 marked down from $499. I got me a eagle talon 12 from dicks for $449. Both are pretty good starter boats. I love my eagle talon it's pretty sturdy and it tracks really stright and is pretty fast. Plus it comes decked out with a trolley system, paddle holders, rod leashes and a Scotty rod holder.

Lots of good suggestion here. Several of the dealers have demo programs that will get you a much better idea of what is acceptable and what is not for you. I think if you demo the Pelican or the Heritage you will very quickly reject them.
Also as per above you will need a PFD and a paddle. Try to go to cheap on either the kayak, paddle or the PFD and you will end up trading up. So trying to save money may actually be counterproductive if you don't do your research.
Nobody makes what I want so I build my own. Although more recently I have seen some very nice fishing kayaks. If I could take all of the good features of a Jackson, combine them with a Hobie Mirage drive and then keep the hull weight around 30 lbs and keep the price under 1K bucks I'd probably buy it. But oh yeh, I like a hard back seat where I can mount stuff to it and nobody does that. So building my own is the only way for me.

I have that dream kayak. The kayak in this picture is 15'X 28" and hull weight of 40 lbs. Would have been 35 lbs except I made an error in construction. My kayak SANDY is 14'X 28" and weighs 30 lbs with an Expedition Seat and an ONO paddle. Draws about 3.5". Next Kayak? is still on the CAD file.
