I will be headed out to Calaveras on Sunday if anyone would like to join. I am planning on getting there first thing in the morning. This is my first time out there so it will be more a learning experience. If anyone who has any experience out there has any words of wisdom they would also be much appreciated.

When you enter the gate and after you pay and leave the window take a an immediate left and follow the road around the little cove and continue on toward the dam. At the end of the road next to the dam is a gravel beach where it's designated the kayak launch.
You don't have to launch there but most kayakers do as the wind is usually always blowing from the SE and it's fairly protected from the winds.
You can fish along the riprap of the dam or fish the area across the length of the dam for hybrid stripers and redfish. Cats can also be caught along the dam as well. Usually about the sixth light pole is a good spot that I like to fish and anchor about a long cast distance from the rocks and cast out toward the power plant using either cut shad or my favorite cat bait which is Big Marv's punch bait on a #6 treble hook on the bottom anchored with a large split shot about 18 inches up the line.
If you feel up to a long paddle you can go all the way across to the other side of the dam and fish along the tree lines or go around telephone pole point and fish the underwater stock tank dam at the middle of the second cove.
Baits of choice are fresh cut shad, small cut talapia or live, and shrimp preferably peeled.
All above will work for reds and cats as well. Expect to catch cats, reds or hybrids.
Id also suggest you troll a rattle trap if you decide to paddle across in front of the dam.
There is also the "wall" which is a popular spot that everyone wants to fish but it's a circus there especially on the weekend.
I would not recommend it for a kayaker on a weekend though but if you do fish it just be careful going across the open water in the boat traffic and you will probably have to deal with shoulder to shoulder people on the wall and a lot of crossed lines and hot tempers.
If you have a cast net you can catch plenty of bait there at the kayak launch. Either cast along the shoreline or cast into that little backwater pond next to the launch, you can't miss it.
