I really enjoy being alone on the lake. Thought about trying some night fishing and don't even know where to start. Any tips for a guy on lures/colors, or where to find the fish? Is it good this time of year?

Simplest answer: Fish near docks with lights on them. They don't always have to be super bright lights either... just lights. My #1 nighttime producer is a PowerTeam Lures Ribbon Hinge worm in Black w/ Blue Flk. It's a big worm that catches big bass. It moves a lot more water than your standard 10" Power Worm. Other than that, other top baits include creature baits, Jitterbugs, buzzbaits, and spinnerbaits... all in very dark colors of course. Good luck! You can catch some of the biggest bass of your life at nighttime.

Make sure your running lights are working and keep them on. Keep your eyes open for idiots out on the water who don't have theirs on. Be sure to have some Off or something with Deet in it with you because the mosquitos will carry you away. Make sure you have a light of some kind in the boat to help with landing and unhooking fish, tying knots, and so forth. I wear a headlight that I only turn on when I need it. Be sure to have a spotlight to help you follow buoys, look for stumps and hazards in the water, find landmarks, and signal other boaters that you're there.

If you're not a good swimmer wear your life preserver all the time. It's easier to fall out of a boat at night than during the day. Wear your kill switch anytime you run.

I eat and drink all night. That and catching a fish now and then keep me awake.

I like to throw a jig behing/around lit up docks. If you're fishing alone make sure to bring you a red bull! It gets hard to stay awake out there. Catching fish also helps lol

Make a few trips in the daylight to get navigation down. I like to follow some of my old tracks, but be aware of floating logs etc. that might get blown around.

Because it's dark, you don't wear sunglasses but wear clear safety glasses. You never know when a stuck lure gets unstuck and flies back at your face. Trust me on that one. And, the glasses keep the insects out of your eyes when running on plane.

Bass can be caught on any kind and on any color of lure at night, just like during the day. They have no problem locating anything that you want to throw at them. The challenge of night fishing is of course, dealing with the darkness. You might want to start out with some bank fishing at a pond so you can get used to casting and get your feel down for what's going on. Some good suggestions have been made for equipment that you will need along with some tips on safety which you should be very aware of once you're out on the lake. Night fishing has always been some of my favorite and most productive time on the water. Do it right and you'll have a blast.
