Just moved to Houston for work and have been down to the coast a few times to surf fish, but been itching to take the kayak out and do some fly fishing.

I have seen kayak trails down in Christmas bay, and have found a few spots in Galveston to fly fish.

I've done mostly fresh water fly fishing and have no clue what to look for as far as saltwater.

Can you just paddle along the bay and get out and wade? Do I need ray guards or just stay in the kayak? Blind cast or find trailing fish and sight cast?

Any advice or do and dont's would be much appreciated.

I have never fished the Galveston area but I have fished the Port Mansfield area for many years. I'm just guessing that it's roughly the same. The biggest trick to bay fishing is that you want the water to be moving( by that I mean tide. It doesn't really matter if it's incoming or outgoing as long as it is strong. If you kick up mud from the bottom and it just settles back down, that's bad. Look at the tide charts and time you trips to the best tide movement. I prefer to wade but that's just me. The trick to stingrays is to slide your feet along the bottom - don't step. Drag the toe of your shoes along the bottom as you walk and you will shove the ray along, as apprised to stepping on him. I've dine this since I was a kid and I have never had any trouble. Hope this helps a little - good luck.

Oh, and 99 percent of the fish I catch are tailing or cruising fish that I'm sight casting to. Blind casting works but I prefer to throw shrimp and crab patterns to sight fish, it's just a personal preference. You can also blind cast Clousers into the channels and no telling what you will hook. Try casting the clouser right along the edge of the channel were the grass drops off to the mud bottom of the channel.
