How do I loosen the tension on my 109 MG Trolling motor. It is really hard to steer. My old boat had the reverse problem it was too loose so I used a "Pro Control" on it and that solved the problem.

Problem checklist:
Check bare steering cables under you foot pedal - have they come off the sheaves?
Possible frayed steering cable you can't see.
Ball bearing has come apart between inner & outer shafts
When the motor is in use - is the control cable bundle in a kink or a bind? Needs to lay naturally between pedal & motor head
When you lay the motor into the cradle -does the foot pedal go hard toe down or heel down position when you latch it down? If it does -you are stretching the cables to failure - to fix - lay motor in cradle -don't latch it -loosen the big knob just under the head - move it back & forth - watch the foot pedal - re tighten the knob with the foot pedal in its steering range.

All I can think of for now - betcha it's one of the above.

If it's a Tour Edition, there are cable tension adjustments at bottom front of pedal. Adjustment procedures are outlined in owners manual.

T Bird yes it is a tour edition. I bought the boat used so it did not have a manual. I'll look on-line for one. Thanks for the advice.

The nuts in front of the springs where the cables go into the foot pedal adjust the tension of the footpedal. That is, they adjust the slack, or lack of. There are not used to tighten / loosen the actual steering. The steering is effected by: bad bearings, bad cables, bent shafts, twisted cables.
