So why are only the crappie rods that long? And not others like white bass? Long poles are harder to cast a bait. White bass fishing is usually casting lures. If your style of crappie fishing is casting roadrunners or jigs, a 6-7 ft pole is much easier to handle for several hours. It's personal preference mostly.

Originally they were designed long for vertical jigging around brush and lay downs. When the crappie would go up the creeks you could take a jigging pole or a cane pole and drop jigs in and out and all around brush where the crappie were holding. The older models didn't have reels at all. The rod was the drag....long an limber. You could use the length to get the jig out to places and hold it there where you couldn't with a traditional rod and reel. I have one I use for bream fishing in my pond. It doesn't have a reel. The line just wraps around two cleats at the handle. My water is clear and I use it sometimes to tease the bream with a jig. I love watching them get aggravated at the jig hovering in front of them.
