The wife isn't comfortable using bait caster yet. but when we are flippin cover the 10-12lb big game anit gonna cut it. we have had to many break offs. even lost a couple of expensive frogs, do to fish geting bundle up up in grass and breaking her off. so i put some 15lb big game on there but it cast horribly, and there is so much memory, more untangling them fishing anyone ever use braid on spinning tackle? if so what size. the spinning gear i bought her is rated for 12lb line by Abu Garcia. any advice on this would be helpful. thanks

I have 20 lb braid on my spinning reels. The diameter of 20 lb braid is a lot smaller than 12 lb mono or fluorocarbon

Braid is ALL I use on spinning gear. Even my finesse fairy wand has braid on it. I use Samurai 30lb braid. It casts great. Zero memory, as with any braid. And for the finesse part, I use a flourocarbon leader.
Try 30-40lb braid. You (she) will like it. Just make sure to use a backing or the rubber "braid" spool cover that came with the reel. (If it did. Some don't)
30lb braid is around the same diameter as 8lb mono. 40 is closer to 10lb mono.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.

Several issues here, Wack.
First, braid will work fine on a spinning reel.
Check out Captain Chris Myers, of Florida, on Youtube expounding on the virtues of braid (usually with a fluor or mono leader) over monofilament. He catches tarpon on spinning tackle, which he greatly prefers over bait casters) with relatively light braids.
But, if you are flipping in heavy grass and cover, while the line may be (likely is) problematic, so will the power of the rod and reel be an issue to get the fish out fast. If she has a medium or medium light rod, for example, putting braid on it likely won't solve the "weak link" which will be hauling the fish out before it turns and runs for cover and wraps itself up.
And, braid isn't any less capable of sawing off via abrasion than mono. There is a video floating around of a young man demonstrating this by rubbing braid back and forth over a rock, then mono. Mono holds out longer before the sandpapering snaps it.
If she sticks with light tackle until she masters the bait caster, I might suggest trying Sufix Elite in 14 lbs. test just for the castability of the line and its strength and good manners. But, it still won't help if the tackle is under-powered for the job at hand.
Good luck! Brad

Steez McQueen backing???? Please explain? or rubber braid spool?? It's didn't do I have to get that before I put braid on her spinning gear? Because braid does not stretch and tighten up around the spool it has a bad habit of slipping around the spool. To remedy this people use mono backing, tape around the bare spool, or rubber grips that let the braid bite into it better. I didn't know this at first and had to redo all of my braided reels a while back.

I use 15lb braid on spinning gear. Typically the white invisibraid from Academy.

I switched to nanofil and won't use anything else again. However I don't flip heavy cover with spinning gear. I use 12lb and wish I would have started using it sooner.

if its me, find the braid with diameter of 8-10 lb test mono... go with that. it will be 20-30lb test braid i'll bet.... That said, if your shallo and not fishing Gin clear water... don't mess with a leader. I think the "seeing" the braid is way blow out of proportion. I got a buddy who is 100% braid, and i'll put him in a boat against any of you...

20lb braid on one, 12lb Berkley xl pro 100% fluoro on another. Best spinning reel fluoro there is.

Flipping heavy grass/lily pads with spinning gear and braid is no problem; just have to have the right set up. These set ups tend to be heavier than average, which many women might not like (arm fatigue)
If your wife has good arm/shoulder strength, then I'd recommend a MH or heavy 6' to 6'6" rod with a sturdy high capacity spinning reel.
A cost effective, lighter option would be an Ugly Stik Elite 6" MH spinning rod MODEL # USESP601MH ($50) The Elite series rods are 30% lighter than the GX2. This particular model number might have to be ordered online (Basspro/Cabela's/etc tend to only stock medium and lighter spinning rods) and a Shimano Sienna 2500 FD ($30) The Sienna is widely available including Academy

Power Pro Braid This,,,,, the cost effective lighter option. the only spinning gear I use is this exact set up. I have landed many many fish with topwaters & weightless flukes with this set up. NO LEADER,,,,, direct tie to 30# Suffix or Power Pro braid.

Sunline SX1 30 or 40lb, and use an Alberto Knot to tie a fluorocarbon 12-15 lb. leader.

I use either 20lb. or 30lb. braid. Currently using the new P-line Teflon coated braid (TCB) which seems to work well. I use either a 12lb. leader for open water or 15lb. leader if fishing around a lot of docks or stumps (P-line CX premium). For backing, I put enough mono on the reel spool to cover the drum completely and then tie the braid to the mono and crank on enough braid to fill the spool(leave 1/8 - 1/4 inch space below the outside diameter of the spool lip so you don't over fill it). A 6'6" Shimano Compre medium spinning rod works well for me, but I'm not fishing pads or grass.
In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.
