I have a 16' alumacraft 165 and bought the anchor suggested by the cabelas sales guy that has the galvanized blades and the metal loop with a small ring attached. I then put about 4' of heavy chain attached to it before my 100' of anchor line. I'm still unable to consistently get it to bite so I continuously drift or have to keep pulling it up to reset. This happens in deep and shallow drops. About the only time it will hook seems like when it eventually hooks the brush piles I'm trying to anchor over which is a definite no go. Do I just need a different kind of anchor or a larger one? Or both?

Keep in mind when anchoring you need 3 times the amount of line out that you are deep, so if you are trying to anchor out in 20' of water you need 60feet of line out to change the pulling point so when boat wakes and waves come you actually won't be lifting the anchor off the bottom.

Yeah he explained that as well it still pulls it. I've even let all 100' of rope out in 15-20' and still same results. Idk if it's just to sandy on the bottom but even then I've pulled up chunks of clay and it still hadn't hooked up.

Sounds still like too small of anchor. However, if you are fishing brushpiles you really should be using your Tm to hold yourself over it... it just takes practice. That is unless you plan on sitting for a long time. Then I can see why the use of the anchor as I've done it to hen fishing at night. I would go up one size of anchor... I have found that going up one more than recommended ensures a good hook.

Thanks saltydawg88 I'm definitely gonna go up a size. I anchor up a lot not a big mover especially when I'm on em. I've also done some thinking on using two anchors so I can let out and pull in line on each to set down on the exact spot I wanna drop lines. I was on em real good today on Ray Roberts but couldn't get anchored up good enough to hold tight on the brush pile I wanted to be on.

Might try a box anchor
